Sports Photography

What is SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY
This  is one of the few remaining pure forms of documentary photography. The moment happens and it is gone. You either capture it in an image or you don't. Unlike sports writers and television, still photographers don't have the luxury of instant replay.

If you love sports and photography, it can be a great job. You get into the games for free. You get the best seats in the house, and you get paid to do it!

However, it is very difficult to make a living as a sports photographer. In fact, it is becoming increasingly difficult to make a living as any kind of photographer. You have to be very good excellent at the craft of photography and you have to be a good great business person. You also have to be very lucky because the odds are really against you. There are very few full-time sports photography jobs available.

On the other hand, if you just love sports and photography, and don't need to make a living at it, it can be extremely rewarding and a lot of fun!

AT START

Go to little league games and practice with what equipment you have. Go to high school games and shoot. At some high schools you can find football, soccer, field hockey, baseball and softball all going on at the same time in the afternoon in the fall. Look for action and feature shots. See how good your knowledge of the game is, and how good your anticipation and reflexes are. Build up a portfolio that shows what you can do.
If you are  good, you can contact the local weekly newspaper, show your work and see if they need anyone to shoot the local high school games. Move up a level and continue to practice your craft. These athletes really give total effort and you can capture this in your images.

Elements Necessary for Success

Talent -

Skill -

Knowledge - You need knowledge both of your craft and of the game you are photographing.

Practice - Photography is a physical as well as a mental skill. Practice will make you better at both. Skills improve dramatically with practice and atrophy with disuse.

Desire - Your philosophy and attitude will affect your work.

Work - Make a commitment to excellence.

Opportunity -  You have to seize them when them.

Luck - Some say you can't control it, but it
favors the prepared.

Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD20x Wide-angle Optical Zoom
This high-powered 20x Wide-angle Optical Zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake so you achieve magnificent images whether you are up close or far away.

The PowerShot SX20 IS is equipped with a 20x Optical Zoom lens with a focal length of 5.0 - 100mm (35mm equivalent: 28 - 560mm) that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. The camera uses a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel.
The lens is optimized to fully exploit its zoom length and wide shooting angle in concert with the camera's high 12.1 Megapixel resolution. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens.

ENTER THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT

digital

For other uses, see Digital (disambiguation).
A digital system is a data technology that uses discrete values. By contrast, non-digital systems use a continuous range of values to represent information. Although digital representations are discrete, the information represented can be either discrete, such as letters, icons, or continuous numbers, such as sounds, images, and other measurements of continuous systems.

The word digital comes from the same source as the word digit and digitus (the Latin word for finger), as fingers are used for discrete counting.

The word digital is most commonly used in computing and electronics, especially where real-world information is converted to binary numeric form as in digital audio and digital photography.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DSLR AND POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA

Digital SLR cameras offer either a full or stripped down version of Through The Lens (TTL) preview. That means that, as you take a shot with a digital SLR, you are going to look through the lens .Point and shoot cameras use a "viewfinder," which can only show the subject and not how the shot is going to come out. To do otherwise would require using the LCD preview, and often the LCD preview won't give a true preview of the shot.

2. One of the biggest differences is the interchangeable lens. On a DSLR camera, you can pop the lens out and put a new one on. DSLR lenses are specialized towards specific applications (macro for closeups, telephoto for long-distance, etc. etc).

3. Another big difference is zoom. A digital point-and-shoot camera has a very limited focal length. For normal, wide-angle shots, that's not a big deal, but the DSLR camera telephoto lens can have a much longer focal length. That allows you to photograph subjects at great distances.

4. In low-light situations, not only the ISO "film rating" can be adjusted, but also the shutter time. Many DSLR cameras even have a "bulb" setting, which means that as long as you depress the shutter release button, the shutter will remain open. This allows you to expose the sensor for an indefinite amount of time.

That accomplishes two things. One, it allows you to photograph subjects in minimal light without changing the ISO setting or using a flash.

Second, it also means that you can blur objects in motion. Since the sensor is exposed for potentially longer times, that can cause the object to "streak." That means you can show motion in one single shot, rather than in a sequence of shots.

5. DSLR cameras usually have a built-in flash, but they have a "hot shoe" for attached flashes. Certain lighting and subject situations often can be better taken by bouncing the flash off an object over the subject and camera, such as a ceiling. This reduces shadows.

Things to REMEMBER

WHAT TO SHOOT:

QUESTION TO ASK.

1) What is happening here?
2) Does it fit into my assignment?
3) What is the big picture? (the broad impression)
4) What is the small picture? (pencils, hand motions, cigarette smoke details and nuances)
5) What is interesting?
6) What shows what the subject is experiencing?
7) What is subject seeing?
8) What is another angle or perspective?

Important Rule

RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design. It states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. The main reason for observing the rule of thirds is to discourage placement of the subject at the center, or prevent a horizon from appearing to divide the picture in half.[3]

When photographing or filming people, it is common to line the body up with a vertical line, and having the person's eyes in line with a horizontal one. If filming a moving subject, the same pattern is often followed, with the majority of the extra room being in front of the person (the way they are moving).

TAKING PHOTOS

HOLDING CAMERA
Hold the camera solidly in your hand to prevent the camera from shuddering or shifting too much when pressing on the shutter button, and watch your spare fingers so that they don’t interfere with the lens. With smaller cameras, is to hold your eye up to the optical viewfinder to capture the image, rather than the electronic viewfinder – this will help you see exactly what your capturing, and help to stabilize the shot between your hands and your face for less 'camera shake'.

FOCUSING
An important tip is to half-depress the shutter button until the camera has had time to lock the focus, and then completely press the button to take the actual shot. With normal picture-taking, shutter speeds are fast enough that a small amount of shake won’t affect the resulting image , but , there are times when you’d want to use a tripod to compensate, eg: when taking pictures in low light, where the shutter speed will slow down enough to potentially make drag lines, and when using a long zoom, where distant objects are susceptible to blur. In each case, the tripod will settle the image and let you forget about shaking the image and focus on capturing what’s in your mind’s eye.

PREVIEWA big advantage of a digital camera is being able to preview the pictures after you’ve taken them. If you are trying to capture a specific scene, you can review the shot and see if it looks the way you wanted

BUYING A CAMERA
Research Is The Key
The more that you know about the product, the more confident you feel that you purchased the right item for the right price.

For example, You want a camera to replace your old point-and-shoot film camera. You want to be able to print some of the photos that you are going to take, but will never be printing on a large scale.

You've done your homework and know that this means you need a 2.0 to 4.0 Megapixel camera. A salesperson can try to sell you the latest and greatest 8.0 Megapixel model (that costs hundreds more) but it's not worth the extra cost to you. You get the camera you need for a lower price.

Some Other Important Things to keep in mind

*Learn digital camera terms and jargon
*Find the right digital camera for you
*Get the right accessories for your new digital camera
*Store, sort and organize your photographs so you can find them again
*Share your digital photos with friends and family
*Get high-quality, low-cost prints of your photos
*Use your camera effectively to take better pictures

Photography

In one word its all about: VISION.
. The science which relates to the action of light on sensitive bodies in the production of pictures, the fixation of images, and the like. The production of pictures by the photochemical action of light on films of chemicals sensitive to light, and also the production of electronic images in electronic cameras, are both considered types of photography. [1913 Webster]

Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor.
It's never been about the gear. It's always been about seeing something.Powers of observation are everything in art of photography.Photography and painting are the same. Each renders imagination in tangible form.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.
