NEW FROM SAMSUNG

Samsung  launched three New Vision  Samsung NV digital cameras that feature 2.5-inch LCD screens, thin metal bodies, and text recognition that allows users to shoot text and then process it using Samsung's Digimax Reader software.


The first of the cameras -- the  Samsung NV3 -- offers consumers a resolution of 7.3 megapixels, and a thin aluminum body. The NV3 also features Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR), 5x digital zoom and an SD slot to expand the 15MB internal storage, and can play back MP3 files and MPEG-4 content. It has an MSRP of $349.



Next, Samsung offers the  Samsung NV7, a slimlined 7.2 megapixel camera with a large 7x zoom lens. The NV7 features ASR as well as mechanical Optical Picture Stabilization to control camera shake and shoot clear images. It also comes with 30 FPS VGA movie mode and an SD slot to expand its 19 MB of internal memory. The NV7 has an MSRP of $449.



The last of the NV cameras is the Samsung NV10, which has a brushed aluminum body. The NV10 features ASR, 30 FPS VGA movie mode, a Schneider 3x zoom lens and an SD slot to add to its 19 MB of internal storage. The NV10 has an MSRP of $399. All three cameras should be available this fall.

High Tech Hybrid: the Casio EX-P505 Digital Camera

The EXILIM PRO EX-P505 is a palm-sized yet high-performance digital camera with amazing still image and video capability. The EX-P505 features a 5X optical zoom, a 5.0 megapixel CCD imager, Casio's "EXILIM engine", and a large 2-inch TFT color rotating screen that makes angle shots a snap. It offers the same manual operation found on the EX-P600 and EX-P700, as well as high-quality video shooting capability at 30 frames per second, in VGA thanks to the incorporation of MPEG-4 technology.

MPEG-4 technology enables high quality video shooting in VGA size (640 x 480 pixels) at 30 frames per second with stereo audio, the length is limited only by available memory. "Movie BEST SHOT" allows the user to select from sample scenes for a wide range of shooting styles. "Short Movie" lets users film short movies during a single shutter, while other shooting and editing functions such as "MOTION PRINT" can be used to obtain a still image from a movie.

The EX-P505's high-speed startup enables shooting only 0.8 seconds after the power is turned on. Shutter release time lag of only 0.01 sec. means fewer "missed" shots when things are happening fast. Casio's Super Life Battery supplies enough power for approx. 220 pictures per charge. To help conserve the battery the camera power is automatically switched ON/OFF when the LCD panel is opened and closed. Pictures and movies can be quickly transferred to the host PC thanks to a high-speed USB 2.0 interface. That same USB interface can be used to print directly to any Pictbridge compatible printer without need of a computer.

Pros, Cons, and Ideal Users


After all the probing and poking, the real question is: Should you consider buying the Casio EX-P505? The answer is probably "yes," especially if any of these scenarios apply to you:
DSLR owner: If you already own a high-resolution digital SLR and want a lightweight digicam that does all the fun stuff your workhorse doesn't, the EX-P505 is a great choice. It's compact, has a swivel LCD, shoots great movies, captures 5-megapixel stills, and invites experimentation that DSLRs don't. Plus, you get to break out your 43-49mm filters that have been collecting dust on the shelf.

Digital media enthusiast: Can't decide if you're a photographer or a movie maker? This camera will scratch both itches nicely. Buy extra 1GB memory cards. The Mac platform is probably better for this activity because you can easily encode Casio's MPEG-4 files to QuickTime for easy editing and stitching together.

Road warrior: Totable size, long battery life, compact battery charger, high-resolution stills, movie-recording capability, and high fun factor make the Casio a wonderful travel partner. DSLR Cameras are increasingly becoming  in the reach of the average photographer as prices fall and as manufacturers develop more user friendly models

WHY BUY A DSLR CAMERA:

SLR cameras have two primary benefits compared to combined lens and body cameras:




1. An SLR can accept multiple detachable lenses, each of which is designed for a specific purpose. Depending on their photographic needs, owners can attach wide-angle, portrait, telephoto, and other specialty lenses. These detachable lenses tend to have higher-quality optics, which make for sharper photos.



2. An SLR's viewfinder lets the owner see through the same lens as is used to take the image. Most attached-lens cameras use a viewfinder system, which provides the photographer with a separate window to compose and focus the image. Because of the different vantage point provided by a non-SLR viewfinder, the image the photographer sees can be different than the image that is recorded as the final photo. For serious photographers, an SLR's through-the-lens viewfinder provides a truer perspective.

So why are some compact cameras so slow and digital SLRs so fast? It's electronics vs. mechanics.




There's a device called a shutter that sits in front of the digital SLR sensor, blocking it from light.



When you take a photo, the shutter (made up of two curtains) opens and closes.



This is different from a compact camera, where there is no shutter mechanism. In compact cameras, the sensor is electronically activated every time you take a photo.



The advantage of the mechanical solution is that it is instantaneous: you press the shutter button and the shutter snaps open.

 
High Quality in Low-Light


One clear advantage of digital SLR cameras is that they're able to capture photos even when there's not a lot of ambient light.
Digital SLRs are able to take photos when there's little available light because of a feature called ISO: it makes the digital sensor more sensitive to light.




While several compact digital cameras will also let you change the ISO of the camera, there is one key difference.



As you increase the ISO (and increase the camera's sensitivity to light) you also add grain or "noise" to the image.



The advantage of digital SLR cameras when it comes to ISO is that even at high ISO settings they produce very little noise. I can't say the same about compact cameras.

With a digital SLR, you have complete control over every photo you take, and don't have to rely on the camera to make choices for you.




Even if you're not ready to make the jump to a fully manual camera, don't be frightened off.



Every digital SLR camera lets you use an automatic setting, and provides you with intermediate steps that offer increasing levels of control over your images.

A digital system is a data technology that uses discrete values. By contrast, non-digital systems use a continuous range of values to represent information. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DSLR AND POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA

Digital SLR cameras offer either a full or stripped down version of Through The Lens (TTL) preview. That means that, as you take a shot with a digital SLR, you are going to look through the lens .Point and shoot cameras use a "viewfinder," which can only show the subject and not how the shot is going to come out. To do otherwise would require using the LCD preview, and often the LCD preview won't give a true preview of the shot.



2. One of the biggest differences is the interchangeable lens. On a DSLR camera, you can pop the lens out and put a new one on. DSLR lenses are specialized towards specific applications (macro for closeups, telephoto for long-distance, etc. etc).



3. Another big difference is zoom. A digital point-and-shoot camera has a very limited focal length. For normal, wide-angle shots, that's not a big deal, but the DSLR camera telephoto lens can have a much longer focal length. That allows you to photograph subjects at great distances.



4. In low-light situations, not only the ISO "film rating" can be adjusted, but also the shutter time. Many DSLR cameras even have a "bulb" setting, which means that as long as you depress the shutter release button, the shutter will remain open. This allows you to expose the sensor for an indefinite amount of time.



That accomplishes two things. One, it allows you to photograph subjects in minimal light without changing the ISO setting or using a flash.



Second, it also means that you can blur objects in motion. Since the sensor is exposed for potentially longer times, that can cause the object to "streak." That means you can show motion in one single shot, rather than in a sequence of shots.



5. DSLR cameras usually have a built-in flash, but they have a "hot shoe" for attached flashes. Certain lighting and subject situations often can be better taken by bouncing the flash off an object over the subject and camera, such as a ceiling. This reduces shadows.

Sony announced the launch of three new entry-level Alpha ( ) cameras - α230, α330 and α380 - delivering greater usability to first-time DSLR users.

The latest cameras offer an all-new Graphic User Interface (GUI), lightweight and stylish design, and high performance features, allowing users to intuitively understand DSLR camera functions and capture images effortlessly.

The α330 and α380 sport Sony’s unique Quick AF Live View technology, while the α230, at 450g is the world’s lightest DSLR camera (as of 18 May 2009, based on DSLRs using APS-C or full-frame sized sensors)

The first DSLR cameras to feature a Graphical User Interface (GUI) with a built-in on-screen Help Guide.Unique graphic display demonstrates the link between aperture and shutter speed, indicating how the chosen setting can impact the final output.

Hold the camera solidly in your hand to prevent the camera from shuddering or shifting too much when pressing on the shutter button, and watch your spare fingers so that they don’t interfere with the lens.With smaller cameras, is to hold your eye up to the optical viewfinder to capture the image, rather than the electronic viewfinder – this will help you see exactly what your capturing,and help to stabilize the shot between your hands and your face for less 'camera shake'.

FOCUSING
An important tip is to half-depress the shutter button until the camera has had time to lock the focus, and then completely press the button to take the actual shot. With normal picture-taking, shutter speeds are fast enough that a small amount of shake won’t affect the resulting image , but , there are times when you’d want to use a tripod to compensate, eg: when taking pictures in low light, where the shutter speed will slow down enough to potentially make drag lines, and when using a long zoom, where distant objects are susceptible to blur.
